Description
Pine, Virginia 1-0 (Pinus virginiana)
Zone 4-8
Full sun
Virginia pine reaches a mature size of 50 to 80 feet in height and 12 to 14 inches in diameter. The lumber is used for rough construction but warps easily with alternate wetting and drying. The wood has a very long fiber and makes excellent paper pulp. Small songbirds eat the seeds and may roost in thick stands of young pine. Virginia pines tolerance for poor soil makes it suitable for reclaiming strip-mined lands. Its habitat includes various well-drained soils, and it can tolerate eroded and dry soil.
