Description
Red Cedar, Eastern 1-0 (Juniperus virginiana)
Zone 2-9
Full sun
The Eastern Red Cedar is a dense slow-growing coniferous evergreen that can grow from 16-66 feet tall and have a diameter of 12 – 39 inches. Eastern red cedar grows in a wide range of climatic and soil conditions. The tree is extremely tolerant of drought due to its extensive, fibrous root system and reduced leaf area. The juniper berries produced by female trees are an important winter food source for birds and small mammals, and the cones on male trees produce a large amount of pollen that attracts butterflies, moths, and other pollinators.
