Hackberry 1-0 (Celtis occidentalis)
Zone 2-9
Full sun to partial sun tolerant
The hackberry is a medium-sized tree, 30 to 50 ft in height, with a slender trunk. It has a round-topped head and pendulous branches. It prefers rich moist soil but has been known to grow on gravelly or rocky hillsides.  Its fleshy, purple-brown berries ripen in late summer and persist through winter. The persistent fruits attract many birds that also find the tree to be a suitable nesting site. This species can be grown in full sun to partial shade in moist, amended, well-drained soils.
