Chinkapin Oak 1-0 (Quercus muehlenbergii)
Zone 3-9
Full Sun

Chinkapin Oak is a part of the white oak group. In native areas, these trees grow in dry upland sites, often in rocky soils. Although the flowering is insignificant, the tiny yellow-green flowers produce separate male and female catkins in spring as leaves emerge. The smaller acorns (3/4” long typically) are a valuable food source for a wide variety of wildlife. Fall color is yellow-brown. Chinkapin is commonly planted as a large shade tree for extensive lawns and parks. This tree is enjoyed and preferred by wild turkey, grouse, black bear, and chipmunks.
